Exclusive Halloween Interview With Artie Lange

I sat down with beloved comedian Artie Lange after his show, Artie Lange: The Comeback, at Standup NY! He talked about ghosts, the worst Halloween costume he's ever seen, his stance on candy corn, the scariest thing about stand-up, and trick-or-treating.

Do you believe in ghosts?

Yeah, I guess I do [...] I think there's spirits floating around certain houses, absolutely. Here definitely, the ghost of Mitch Hedberg and Greg Giraldo. [...] If you spend a lot of time in a place of someone that died, it might be in your head, but in that sense it exists. I'd say yes to that.

What's the worst Halloween costume you've ever seen or worn?

I've seen someone in an Artie Lange costume when I was on the Stern Show—they were just drinking and doing coke. And I wore that costume every day so it was depressing. That's a true story. Somebody was Artie Lange.

What is your stance on candy corn? I hate it—anything that's loose. It should be wrapped. They should put a candy corn rubber around those things. [...] I hate it. Very negative.

What is the scariest thing about stand-up?

Just the fact that you have to talk in front of a bunch of strangers who are drinking. Simple fact. Never changes. I'm terrified now and I've been doing it for thirty years.

Who would be the best people to go trick-or-treating with? Ugly people. Because they're people you always wish wore a mask anyway. If you have ugly friends, it's the best time to hang out with them. You don't have to look at them. It's an excuse not to look at them.
